November 2008 update:

The 2008 Award Program will be held on November 28th at the NECC cattle barn in one of the classrooms, beginning at 4 p.m. unless the breeding show goes later, than it will start directly following the show.

Winners will be posted on the website soon.  If you know you our receiving an award and are unable to make it to the awards program talk to one of the advisors and they will give you your award and take a picture for the website.

There will be an officer meeting in the NECC classroom at 3 p.m. on November 28th, if you cannot make it please let an advisor know.

Since the breeding show will be on Friday, November 28th, we will be allowing juniors to receive points for their breeding heifers if they sign up later than the breeding show.  This will be the only time juniors will be allowed to receive points after the show.  This does not include market animals.  Juniors must be signed up prior to the market show to receive points for their market animal.

**Rule Change:  This year breed steers will need to have registration papers to show in a designated breed.  NECC will not be checking for papers but after this show all show managers are required to check steer breed papers.**

JNC board members, Klaire Jorgensen and Lauren Long received $1000 scholarships from the Nebraska Cattlemen Research & Education Foundation at the Mid-Year Conference in Lincoln on Friday, June 13. Klaire is going to Kansas State University to study Ag Economics and Lauren is going to the University of Nebraska to study Ag Business.

June '08 update:

There are only a few sanctioned cattle shows left for the 2008 year. Numbers have again declined as far as cattle members except for the shows that hold two rings or two different sponsored shows on one weekend. If any of the JNC members have any input with any shows for the 2008-09 year, please try to get the show committees to consider holding their show in conjunction with another group's show on the same weekend or do a two-ring one-day type of show. This is going to be a key factor for several years to come as there is not an end in sight for the high cost of oil and what is is doing to our economy, lifestyles, and the luxury of going to a progress show every weekend.

On to another topic... the merger with another group that will include multiple species will happen after November 2008. The major sponsor of this venture has changed, and now it looks like some extra time is needed to make a smooth transition. Just a reminder to all JNC members to let a board member know if your points need to be reconsidered/refigured for any show. Give us suggestions for improvement. Hopefully all members with purebred animals have or are going to be participating in your breed organizations state/regional/national shows... progress shows are not the end but just the beginning of building you skills, gaining knowledge and networking with others who share your passion for a certain breed of cattle.

Remember that we are junior cattlemen with hopes to be part of the big picture of the livestock industry in Nebraska one day. That is the ultimate "prize" for being a member of the Junior Nebraska Cattlemen.

Sincerely,

Klaire Jorgensen, JNC President

P.S. Watch for the new date of awards program this year. Advisor Kelsey Lamb is going overseas again for another year's tour of duty. We will try to hold awards during the Nebraska State Fair before she leaves. Keep checking the website.

Please check your points and if there are any problems please let Kelsey know as soon as possible.

The Junior Nebraska Cattlemen has been in place for almost ten years. There are exciting new ventures that this coming year may hold for the organization and I and the 2008 board will keep you informed all the way. We have been self-sufficient with minimal outside help all these years and we would like to expand our sponsorship as we expand our membership to include multiple species. Be sure to check the message board on the website and talk to the board members at the shows to get the latest updates. I want every member to keep in mind that the real reward of doing well in any activity/organization is measured by how much you learn, how hard you work to reach your goal, the friends you make along the way while being with your family as you do it. Good Luck in the coming year!

-Klaire

The 2007-2008 award ceremony will be held at the Norfolk Agriculture Complex in a classroom, the same place as last year, on the 28th of November at 4. There will also be a short board meeting at 3 in the same class room.
