MaineTainer Program Increases Options for Maine-Anjou Breeders

Platte City, Mo. – The American Maine-Anjou Association has announced a new registration program, and a change in existing registration guidelines.

Following the summer session of the AMAA Board of Directors, cattle down to 1/4blood Maine-Anjou are now eligible for registration in the AMAA.

Any female may be registered down to ¼ blood while bulls must be out of registered sires. Only steers out of registered AMAA sires are eligible for registration.

In order to recognize the unique qualities and value of low-percentage Maine-Anjou cattle, the AMAA has developed the MaineTainer program. MaineTainer cattle are all registered Maine-Anjou, from ¼ to 5/8 blood.

Beginning with the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show in June, 2003, MaineTainer cattle will be shown separately from high-percentage Maine-Anjou. Check with your state and regional show officials to confirm recognition of MaineTainer shows.

The MaineTainer program, in which cattle can start at the F1 level, maintains hybrid vigor and allows breeders to use Maine-Anjou genetics in a cross-breeding program suited to their environmental and marketing conditions. At the same time, it allows breeders to maintain a consistent, documented breeding program using registered seedstock.
